Script Analysis Advanced Acting Class

with Oleg Liptsin

 March 9 - April 9, 2011

at Shelton Theater School, San Francisco

This 5 week long class will immerse its participants in the process of professional understanding of dramatic text and the techniques of transmitting it into performing structure.  The program will be particularly focused on the Method of Action Analysis (analyzing the script with the help of dramatic action) as one of the most authentic contemporary methods based on the ideas proposed by K. Stanislavsky.

The studying process will consist from theoretical part and practical element, allowing not only to understand the main concept of proposed methodology but also to discover the most effective applications of it to acting on stage.  In order to demonstrate and experience some specifics and practical aspects of proposed technique, the class will experiment with using the method of script analysis in staging texts by two different authors – Anton Chekhov and Bertolt Brecht.  Dealing with those two contrasting types of dramatic literature should help the students not only to apprehend the main subject of the class but also to uphold their understanding of the craft of acting and some sides of directing.

Literature and materials used in the course:

-    Konstantin Stanislavsky “Actor Prepares”,

-    Anton Chekhov – major plays, short plays,

- Maria Knebel “Method of Action Analysis”

- Michael Butkevich “Towards The Theater-As-A-Game”

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT COURSE - October-November 2010 in collaboration with Shelton Theater School, San Francisco, California

This intensive workshop is proposed for the advanced level acting students and is particularly focused on the concept of understanding the notion of dramatic character and techniques of its representation on stage within the approach proposed by K. Stanislavsky and developed later on by his followers in Russian theater of the 20 - 21st century.  In the course of classes students will be introduced to the specifics of understanding the dramatic character from two different sides: from the inside (psychological approach), based on the analysis of factual, historical and individual circumstances extracted from the dramatic text; and from the external form (mask approach), based on the elements of Michael Chekhov’s technique and some oriental theatrical traditions.  Upon such introduction the course will immerse its participants in the practical experience of application of the introduced techniques to different aspects of representation of the dramatic character on stage.  Literature and materials used in the course:       Michael Chekhov “On the Technique of Acting”,           K. Stanislavsky “Actor Prepares”,   Literature about “commedia dell’arte” theatrical tradition,   Theatrical facial masks.
